With Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool safely through from Tuesday night, they were joined in the Carling Cup fourth round by Chelsea and title holders Totteham Hotspur as well as a few surprise clubs.
Last season's winners Tottenham defeated Obafemi Martins' Newcastle United 2-1 at St James' Park with Roman Pavluchenko scoring his first goal for the North Londoners while Michael Owen scored a late consolation after James O'Hara had put Spurs 2-0 up.
Chelsea also had no trouble in dispatching Nwankwo Kanu's Portsmouth at Fratton Park with first half strikes by Frank Lampard from the penalty spot and Florent Malouda on the stroke of half time before Lampard, with his second, and Salomon Kalou's second half efforts sunk FA Cup champions Pompey to its second 4-0 loss to Chelsea this season.
The shock of the night however came with Brighton & Hove-Albion knocking out newly bought Manchester City 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw while Queens Park Rangers at Villa Park caused a second upset with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.
Other League Cup encounters on the night saw Wigan Athletic defeat Ipswich Town 4-1 away while Blackburn Rovers edged Everton 1-0 at Ewood Park with a 10th minute goal from Olsson.
