Arsenal produced the high point of the Carling Cup third round ties played in England with a squad of teenagers defeating Championship Sheffield United 6-0 at home in the Emirates Stadium.

18 year old Mexican striker, Carlos Vela got a hattrick in the encounter while Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner, one of few first team players involved, helped himself to two goals as Arsenal, with an average age of 19, reached the fourth round with the youngest ever starting 11 in English football.

In other matches, Manchester United gave Cristiano Ronaldo a first start this season and the Portuguese got the first goal in the 3-1 win at home to fellow Premier League club Middlesbrough who missed strikers Tuncay Sanli and Egyptian Mido who has scored four goals so far.

At Anfield, Liverpool scraped through 2-1 against Crewe Alexander while Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke City and Sunderland came through Reading and Northampton respectively 4-3 on penalties after 2-2 draws; Sunderland coming from 2-0 down.

However, Dickson Etuhu's Fulham fell 1-0 at Burnley while another Premier League side West Ham United fell by the same score to another Championship side Watford City.

Tottenham Hotspur is the defending champion of the Carling Cup after coming from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in last season's final at the Wembley Stadium.

Spurs will be involved tonight at White Hart Lane against fellow Premier League strugglers Newcastle United that is courting a Nigerian consortium that plans to buy the club.

Other third round fixtures tonight will see Yakubu Aiyegbeni's Everton visit Ewood Park to play Blackburn Rovers while Portsmouth will hope to recover from the 6-0 humiliation at Manchester City when Chelsea come visiting Fratton Park.

Manchester City travel to play Brighton & Hove-Albion and Wigan Athletic face Ipswich Town while Aston Villa host Londoners Queens Park Rangers in the other games tonight.
