Barcelona hit top form in the La Liga to ease off pressure on new coach Pep Guardiola and the club management after a 6-1 demolition of Sporting Gijon with Lionel Messi scoring two goals in the match.
The win is the Catalan club's first this season in the league and lifts them to four points, three behind the leading pack of city rivals Espanyol, Kalu Uche's Almeria, Valencia and Villarreal all on seven points.
Espanyol lost its 100% record with a 1-1 draw at home to Ik Uche's Getafe while Villarreal picked a 2-1 win away at Numancia and Valencia and Almeria had 1-0 wins over Osasuna and Malaga respectively.
Defending champions Real Madrid won 2-0 at Racing Santander with second half goals from Ruben de La Red and Ruud van Nistelrooy to move to sixth place on six points behind city rivals Atletico Madrid on goal difference after the latter's 4-0 bashing of Recreativo Huelva.
In Italy, AC Milan overcame a poor start to the season with an impressive 4-1 thrashing of former league leaders SS Lazio in the San Siro with Kaka and Alexander Pato among the scorers.
The win allowed Inter Milan to take over top spot in the Serie A with seven points after a 3-1 win at Torino while Juventus now occupies second spot after a 1-0 win over Cagliari.
AS Roma recovered from the shock midweek defeat in the Champions League with a 3-0 win at home to Reggina while Fiorentina edged Bologna 1-0 at home and Christian Obodo's Udinese played out a goalless draw with Napoli.
