Nigeria's Yakubu Aiyegbeni continued his excellent scoring form for Everton as he got a goal in Everton's 2-2 draw at home to Belgian champions Standard Liege in a first round first leg match in the UEFA Cup.
Yakubu's 23rd minute goal was the Toffees first equaliser after Dieudonne Mbokani had put the Belgians, also parading Nigerian born Onyewu Oguchi, ahead as early as the ninth minute.
However, Super Eagles vice-captain Joseph Yobo put into his own goal to put Liege ahead in the 35th minute before a rocket from new signing Segundo Castillo three minutes later settled the match in a thrilling first half at Goodison Park.
Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu made his first competitive appearance this season for Portsmouth, even if it were for seconds, in the 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes of Portugal with Lassana Diarra and free-scoring Jermain Defoe getting the goals.
In other results, AC Milan finally got it right with its first win of the season, a 3-1 win over FC Zurich with Marek Jankulovski, Alexander Pato and Mario Boriello the scorers for Milan.
Gabriel Agbonlahor's Aston Villa struggled for a 3-1 win over Litex Lovech in Bulgaria while Nedum Onouha's billionaire Manchester City got a 2-1 win at Omonia Nicosia with a brace from Jo and Paris Saint Germain picked same result from Turkey against Julius Aghahowa's Kayserispor.
