Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday described as judgmental, the decision by security agencies to shut down Channels Television without any determination of liabilities according to the law.
According to Governor Fashola who spoke in an interview with newsmen at the Lagos House Alausa, there are sufficient laws to sanction erring media houses following due judicial process. He expressed the hope that the Attorney General of the Federation would rise to the occasion and give appropriate legal advice not only on the rights of the State but rights of the corporate citizens in this instance. In his words: “This is what one expects in this kind of situation for the Attorney General to tell the truth to the authority. Though there are issues of national security contained in the report that precipitated this action, but I still do not think it is right to break the law in order to enforce the law”. He added that from the perspective of Nigeria’s international image, shutting down a news organization is not a credit to our democracy especially without due process. He reiterated that it would send the wrong message to investors, allies and friends. Governor Fashola advocated that except to ensure that no repetition of the offending report continues, investigation can take place while the media house continues to do its business. While reiterating that if infractions have been committed, no kid gloves is applied in ensuring that sanctions supported by the law is applied, the Governor reminded that the organization employs people and has an economic role to play. In his words: “Already, it has contracts with third parties to carry messages. All of these have been affected. Third party rights have also been affected”.
