Source: Vanguard Y’hello... Is it possible for a third party to clone your sim card and use your phone to make calls and send text messages for good or bad, without your knowledge and consent?
That is the big riddle on MTN network. Officially, MTN says it is impossible since the Sim is personal to the holder, no third party can clone your Sim and the data. Therefore, no third party can use your phone number without authorisation. Unofficially, MTN sources admit that criminal elements have gone on the internet before to hack into its system and violate the sanctity of contract with MTN subscribers. The current riddle MTN had to solve happened on Friday, September 12, 2008. A missed call appeared on the phone log 0803400**** as “missed call” which surprisingly emanated from same phone number 0803400****. Perhaps, the owner inadvertently called himself. So he let it be. The real shocker, however, came on Saturday, September 13 when a frightening text message emanated from same phone no 0803400****thus: “Txt frm ur No. Surprised? Ur No. cld be used to TEXT or CALL anoda without ur Knowledge. Was d so-called OSUN “SCANDAL” contrived to embrass d Judiciary & Fool Us?” The scared owner then called up contacts at the MTN to solve the riddle. They disbelieved the story until they got the text below: “Dear friend, the text message below was sent to me using my number 0803400**** a while ago! Frightening? Yes. Yesterday I saw a missed call same way and thought that I mistakenly called myself? What is wrong with my phone? What is this challenge from MTN? Have felons hacked into ur system, cloning Sims and bugging customers? This is very dangerous for me as a newspaper editor and President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors. I await an urgent response pls. Regards. Gbenga Adefaye, Editor, VANGUARD Txt frm ur No.Surprised?Ur No. cld be used to TEXT or CALL anoda without ur Knowledge. Was d so called OSUN “SCANDAL”contrived to embrass d Judiciary& Fool Us?.’ 0803400****.” MTN appears perplexed four days after. While waiting for assurance that MTN network is not bugged and that ICT scammers have not compromised the security of MTN network, subscribers like this victim have to worry about suspect bills for using MTN services apart from security threat and other violations of contract that may be associated with usage of GSM telephones services in Nigeria.
