Chelsea began its campaign in teh UEFA Champions League with a comfortable 4-0 thrashing of French side Girondins Bordeaux while Liverpool came from behind to defeat Olympique Marseille 2-1 in the Velodrome.

The Blues opened scoring in the 15th minute through Frank Lampard's header before the England midfielder's 30th minute corner kick was glanced in by Joe Cole to give Chelsea a 2-0 half time lead.

The home side, unbeaten in four seasons at Stamford Bridge, made it 3-0 in the 86th minute through Florent Malouda following a neat build up play from John Obi Mikel and Lampard.

Ricardo Carvalho then saw a free header crash off the Bordeaux crossbar and Nicholas Anelka hit the sidenetting and crossbar as well but the French striker made it 4-0 on a rebound from Juliano's Belletti's shot, again off the crossbar.

Chelsea now top Group A ahead of CFR Cluj that provided the shock of the night with a 2-1 win against AS Roma at the Olimpico, the Romanian club coming from behind to defeat the Italians.

Group B saw Inter begin its campaign with a 2-0 win away at Panathinaikos while group rivals Werder Bremen and debutantes Anorthosis Famagusta of Cyprus played out a goalless draw in Germany.

In Group C, Barcelona put behind a poor la Liga start to defeat Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in the Camp Nou with Rafael Marquez and Samuel Eto'o among the scorers. Barcelona lead the group ahead of Shaktar Donestk that won 2-1 at Swiss champions FC Basel.

Five time winners Liverpool began on a winning note as well, coming from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Taye Taiwo's Marseille courtesy of a Steven Gerrard brace. New boys Atletico Madrid however leads the group following an impressive 3-0 success over PSV Eindhoven in Holland.

Matchday 1 of the Champions League continues later today with defending champions Manchester United at home to Villarreal and Arsenal on a daunting trip to Dynamo Kyiv of Ukraine.
