Nigeria Round Off Paralympics with Two More Medals

Nigeria earlier today added two more medals at the Paralympics Games in Beijing with Eucharia Iyiazi winning gold in the women's Discus Throw F57/58 with a throw of 35.21 meters. Iyaizi had earlier in the Games won gold in the women's Shot Put F57/58.

Nigeria's second medal of the day came in the men's -100kg Powerlifting event when Obioma Aligekwe lifted 245kg in his third attempt to claim silver behind Dong Qi of China who won gold with a world record lift of 247.5kg in his thrid attempt.

Solomon Amarakuo however had ill luck on him for the day as he failed in all his three attempts in the men's -90kg category won by Huichao Cai of China as well with a lift of 235kg.

Nigeria therefore finishes the Paralympic Games with a total haul of four gold, four silver and one bronze medal to place 30th overall, three bronze medals behind Egypt in 29th and one and three silver medals ahead of Algeria and Morocco in 31st and 32nd position respectively.

South Africa finished an impressive sixth overall to lead the African contingent with 21 gold, three silver and six bronze medals while Tunisia finished with nine gold, nine silver and three bronze medals to finish 14th overall.

Kenya comes next with five gold, three silver and one medal to finish on 26th place. Other African nations on the medals table are 54th placed Angola with three silvers, and Namibia in joint 68th with one bronze medal.

China finished winners of the Paralympics medal race with a haul of 89 gold, 70 silver and 52 bronze medals, well ahead of second placed Great Britain with 42 gold, 29 silver and 31 bronze medals.

The rest of the top five finds the United States in third place with 36 gold, 35 silver and 28 bronze medals, Ukraine in fourth with 24 gold, 18 silver and 32 bronze medals and Australia in fifth with 23 gold, 29 silver and 27 bronze medals.

The next Paralympic Games, just as the Olympic Games, will hold in 2012 in London, capital of the United Kingdom.
