Spanish league winners in 2005 and 2006, CF Barcelona over the weekend followed a shock loss at Numancia with a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Racing Santander, leaving the Catalans with just one point from two games.

On the otherhand, city rivals Espanyol is now the only team with a 100& record following a 1-0 win away at Bartholomew Ogbeche's Recreativo Huelva courtesy of a late Luis Garcia goal.

Kalu Uche's Almeria meanwhile lost the chance to go top of the La Liga following a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia who now occupy second spot with four points ahead of Almeria on goal difference.

League defending champions Real Madrid recovered from the loss at Deportivo la Coruna to edge out Numancia in a seven goal thriller that ended 4-3, with Real coming from behind twice and Guti scoring the club's 5,000th La Liga goal.

Other results in Spain saw Ik Uche's Getafe draw goalless at home to Real Betis while Sevilla came out 4-3 winners in another seven goal thriller with Freddie Kanoute scoring a brace for Sevilla.

In Italy, three goals either side of halftime saw Inter Milan pick a 2-1 win from Catania despite losing Ghanaian international Sulley Muntari to a red card just before half time.

The win puts Inter in fourth place on four points, two behind early frontrunners SS Lazio and Atalanta with Ayo Makinwa's Lazio leading on goal difference following another impressive performance in beating Sampdoria 2-0.

Last season's runner-up Roma slumped to a 3-1 reverse at Palermo and will be without midfielder Daniele de Rossi for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with debutantes FC Cluj.

The shock of the Serie A weekend however came at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium where Genoa handed AC Milan a 2-0 defeat, leaving the San Siro giants without a win this season and 19th on the 20 team table.

Other results saw Juventus edge Udinese 1-0 with a late Amauri goal while fan-troubled Napoli came from an Adrian Mutu goal to beat Cahmpions League campaigners Fiorentina 2-1.
