Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Sunday restated the commitment of his administration to continue to embrace the Scouts and other voluntary organizations as a means of ridding the society of all forms of crimes and anti- social behaviours.
ImageGovernor Fashola who spoke at his colourful investiture as Patron of the Lagos State Scout Council during the 2006 /2007 Annual General Meeting of the Council held at the Lagos House Ikeja, said: “we need to invite our attention to some of the challenge such as drug menace which face our young people and which needs to be addressed”.

He explained that the State Government has put in place multi- faceted efforts to address the boundless energies that young people have for positive purposes.

In his words: “The willingness  that our government  has shown and the commitment that we have demonstrated to the Scout Council is also part of the strategy we think we can deploy to further deepen access to young people and to encourage them to channel their energy to positive efforts”.

Continuing, he said: “We will continue to embrace the Scouts Council, other NGOs and voluntary organizations and their programmes towards ridding our society of all forms of crimes and anti- social behaviours”.

Governor Fashola added that cheques would soon be presented to young people to start their own businesses, with about 4000 of them graduating from the state micro credit scheme.

He added that currently, 5000 young people in secondary schools are undergoing vacation jobs in the Lagos State public service as an addition to other programmes like vocational jobs, direct job creations and micro credit schemes put in place by the state government.

The Governor identified programmes like the MTN Street Soccer Championship as one of the avenues through which the state intends to keep young minds busy for productive purposes.

Governor Fashola charged that “as we become more enlightened, there are certain things that are not acceptable in our community as Africans, Nigerians and people of God. We would continue to be vigilant to ensure that in the name of modernization, we do not permit illegal practices and acts to thrive among us”.

While commending the heeding of his call on the Boys Scout to return to schools, he assured that the body would receive the fullest cooperation from the Deputy Governor who is overseeing Education ministry and all Tutors General/Permanent Secretaries to operate within Lagos Schools.

Governor Fashola implored the Executive Secretaries and incoming Local Government chairmen to engage the Scout Council at the Local Government levels as a major tool for civic engagement in government, for cleaning up, traffic management, beautification and for removing all ills.

Governor Fashola reiterated that the general meeting of the Scouts Council has become a forum not only for interaction but for reviewing the various problems, activities, achievements and problems of the Council in the state while also serving as a forum to exchange ideas and highlight constraints with a view to providing solutions.

He also commended the level of democracy demonstrated by the Scouts Council in its election saying it has attracted no allegation of rigging or ballot box snatching and recommended same to other organizations.

He charged that people should only aspire to public office for service explaining that when people take office for service, there would be no basis for fighting and quarrelling in the quest.

Governor Fashola promised to provide sponsorship to twenty members of the Scout Council to attend the next international conference of the movement scheduled for Brazil in 2011, with the Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social development possibly leading the team.

While promising his assistance to the movement in building the Baden Powell Camp in Ibeshe, he declined the offer to name the hall after him, saying “no human is immortal”.

Earlier, the Lagos Scouts Commissioner, Engineer Gilbert Akinlawon had informed that the Scouts movement represents an avenue to train the youth and inculcate in them the spirit of tenets of good leadership.

He expresses the appreciation of the council to the Governor for allowing the council to give an account of its stewardship while always demonstrating that Scouts could help reshape the society especially through young ones.

He sought the assistance of the Government in sponsoring members to the next World Council of Scouts billed for Brazil in 2011 and the support of efforts to make the Ibeshe Camp a reality for the Council.

Governor Fashola was later presented with the insignia as Patron and took the pledge of the Scouts Movement.
