The national U-17 team were on Sunday afternoon defeated 3-0 by neighbours Benin Republic in the second leg of the first round of qualifiers for the African Youth Championship holding in Algeria next year.

The loss sent the Alphonsus Dike led Golden Eaglets, defending World and African champions, out of contention for a title defence on both fronts on a 3-2 aggregate score after the first leg a fortnight ago finished 2-0 in favour of Nigeria.

Benin had opened scoring in the first half before two further goals in the second half sealed the biggest shock in the U-17 qualifiers which also Rwanda thrash Sudan 4-0 to complete a 6-1 whitewash.

In other qualifiers, Ghana defeated Libya 2-1 in Tripoli to complete a 5-1 aggregate score while Burkina Faso defeated Tunisia 3-1 in Ouagadougou to qualify on the same score after a goalless first leg in Tunis.

Nigeria had won the U-17 title in 2007 led by late coach Yemi Tella before going on to win a third world title against Spain at South Korea with Macaulay Chrisantus emerging as Golden Boot winner.

The country is also due to host the next World U-17 Championship later in 2009 after the African U-17 Championship takes place in Algeria early in 2009.
