Dimunitive Italian great and former Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola will fly into London today to sign a three year contract that will make him Alan Curbishley's replacement as West Ham United manager.
Zola was on the shortlist along with fellow Italians Roberto Donadoni and Roberto Mancini but former Inter Milan coach Mancini almost immediately withdrew from the shortlist while Donadoni, who led Italy to the last eight of Euro 2008, withdrew last week.
Before his sojourn at Upton Park begins this weekend, Zola was assistant coach of the Italian U-21 national team under former Chelsea teammate Pierluigi Casiraghi and saw out his last game away at Crotia with a 1-1 draw, qualifying the Azzurrini for the U-21 European Championship in Sweden.
As a player, Zola was at the 1994 World Cup at the United States where the Azurris lost on penalties to Brazil in the final. He also notably played at Napoli alongside Diego Maradona and Parma where he won the UEFA Cup.
