Swiss master Roger Federer ended a torrid season on a high following a crushing 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Andy Murray to win the US Open and move one Grand Slam close to equaling Pete Sampras' record of 14 Slam wins.
The win was also made Federer the first man since Bill Tilden in 1924 to win the Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows five consecutive times while Murray would have been the first Briton since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the New York event.
However, the Scotsman rose from his previous number six position on the world rankings to number four with the US open his first ever appearance in a Grand Slam final; defeating world number one Rafael Nadal in the semis.
Federer remains world number two ahead of Serbian Novak Djokovic who lost his chance to replace Federer at number two when he lost to the Swiss in the semi-finals.
