Serena Williams early on Monday lifted her third US Open title with a 6-4, 7-5 win over second seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and in the process become the new world number one.
Williams, who also won at Flushing Meadows in 1999 and 2002, has now won nine Grand Slam titles while Jankovic will remain as number two in the world rankings though winning the title would have taken her to the number one spot.
In the men's singles, Andy Murray completed a rain delayed second semi-final with a 6-2, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over world number one Rafael Nadal and reach his first ever final in a Grand Slam.
The win is also Murray's first over Nadal in six meetings between the players and will see the Scot face world number two Roger Federer who is after a first Grand Slam title in 2008.
