The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday afternoon in Port Elizabeth put up a composed performance in defeating South Africa 1-0 and maintain its 100% record in the qualifying series for the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup.

With South Africa needing a win to keep alive its slim chance of qualifying for the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola, Getafe striker Ikechukwu Uche's goal sunk that aspiration and gave Nigeria a fifth win from five matches with no goals conceded.

Other countries to join the Super Eagles in the second phase of the qualifying series are Benin and Cameroun while Egypt and Burkina Faso are in line to confirm their places as well.

Neighbours Benin Republic defeated 2010 Nations Cup host Angola 3-2 in Cotonou with Razak Omotoyossi scoring two goals in the match while Cameroun came from behind to defeat Cape Verde 2-1 in Praia.

African champions Egypt regained top spot in Group 12 on 12 points with a 1-0 win over DR Congo who is now third on nine points behind Malawi who on Saturday beat whipping boys Djibouti 3-0.

In other matches played, Algeria climbed to the top of Group Six with nine points following a dramatic 3-2 win over Senegal who have slipped to second with eight points.

Another North African shock came in Tripoli where Libya handed a lone goal defeat to Ghana in Group Five while Cote D'Ivoire inched closer to the second round with a 1-1 draw at Mozambique, a result that puts the Elephants on nine points on top of Group Seven.
