On October 1, as Nigerians observe the 48th independence anniversary of their country, an addition to the day’s menu would be the unveiling of a cultural showpiece called ‘Nigeria,’ a TV reality show on HiTV; Nigeria’s first indigenous pay-TV platform.
Developed as a vehicle to foster national integration, the reality show is expected to portray the evolution of a patriotic, responsive, productive and unprejudiced Nigerian, to be expressed through symbolic games, chores and roles performed by the neighbours as a demonstration of their understanding of the culture, commerce, folklore and peculiarities Nigeria. In readiness for the arrival of the18 Nigerians drawn from the six geo-political zones, who would live as neighbours on the set for eight weeks, the company said as a microcosm of Nigeria, the housemates must be willing to learn and imbibe other cultures and languages and display a rich knowledge of the socio-cultural ethos of the ethnic groups they hail from. Addressing the press in Lagos through Ms Morayo Aka-Bshorun, Business Development Manager, on Friday September 5, the company said the programme was borne out of the need for national integration, co-existence and mutual respect amongst the country’s different ethnic groups, especially as some of the challenges besetting the country are due to a misunderstanding of who Nigerians are as a people. Aka-Bshorun said the show, developed in collaboration with Dudu Productions, and to be aired on a dedicated channel on HiTV, will re-enact the god/supernatural-man relationship in the house, represented by a ‘Governing Voice;’ that comments on the individual housemates, while there will be such democratic instruments as a leader or president of the neighbours who commands the respect of others. The ‘neighbours’ fate are ultimately in the hands of the viewers who are the ultimate deciders that can either allow a housemate stay on longer or leave the house, through the use of an age-long democratic tradition- the vote, cast in the form of SMS messages. The timing of the show has been described as apt given that the country continues to grapple with a myriad of challenges including religious intolerance, tribal strife, cultural alienation, and strife fuelled by suspicion, dearth of infrastructure and societal/economic dislocation HiTV has from inception placed Nigeria and her citizens at the core of its activities with all its programmes geared at the benefit of the people. Chief amongst this include: the bringing of the Premier League closer to the teeming fans in the country, abundance of family–oriented, religious, entertaining and informative programmes that all aim at moulding the ‘renaissance’ Nigerian. The reality show was originally scheduled to commence on July 5th 2008 but was suspended as Endemol, copyright owners of the Big Brother (BB) reality show aired on Multichoice’s DSTV dragged HiTV to court for copyright infringement. But the injunction was eventually thrown out by the Federal High Court Lagos. Prior to this eighteen Nigerians had been selected out of the thousands that applied online to participate in the show. The screening process was conducted across the six geo-political zones of the country. Quote this article on your site | Views: 459 | Print | E-mail
