World number two Roger Federer two set tie-breakers before overcoming qualifier Gilles Muller of Austria in a straight sets and set up a semi-final clash against world number three Novak Djokovic.

Federer, who has not won a Grand Slam title this year, looked far from his best in defeating Muller 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 though it became his 32nd consecutive win at Flushing Meadows.

Djokovic however powered past home favourite Andy Roddick in four sets of 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 before getting jeers from the New York crowd after saying "Obviously Andy was saying that I have 16 injuries in the last match so obviously I don't, right?".
Roddick was referring to the injury breaks called by the Serb for treatment on his stomach, hip and ankle as well as breathing problems in the quarterfinal match against Tommy Robredo.

In the semi-final, a win for Federer would be his 33rd consecutive at the US Open and put him one match closer to a 13th Grand Slam title, which would be one short of the record 14 held by Pete Sampras.

A win for Djokovic however would see the Serb on his way to replacing Federer as world number two behind Rafael Nadal who faces Scot Andy Murray in the other semi-final. Djokovic then must defeat Nadal or Murray should he make the final to become world number two; and complete a miserable "Slamless" year for Federer.
