The promise by the Nigeria Football League of a less dramatic start to the Premier League season in Nigeria will not be fulfilled after the NFL announced the league will not start as earlier scheduled.

Instead of the September 6 date previously slated as the start of the new campaign, the NFL announced the league would now commence on September 13; September 6 coincides with the qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa.

According to the NFL, the Globacom Premier League start has been put forward due to the board's search for more sponsors to bankroll the league.

Kano Pillars is the Premier League defending champion though Enyimba is expected to make a stronger challenge for the league title this season after finishing a disappointing sixth in the 2007/08 season.
