Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs Farida Waziri has commended donor agencies for their support and interest in the activities of the commission since its inception.
She gave the commendation during a meeting held at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja. The meeting which was tagged 1st Donor Coordination Meeting had in attendance representatives of the various donor agencies and members of the European commission. Among those in attendance were David Omozuafoh, programme analyst, United Nations Development Programme; Matthias Veltin, Deputy head of Mission, Germany Embassy; Desmond Woods, deputy programme manager, DFID/British High Commission; Dagmar Thomas, UNODC Representative in Nigeria; Vicken Koundakjain, Canadian High Commission; Halvor Nusaeus, Norwegian embassy; Fabio Baiarch, Swiss Embassy; Demi Thieulin, European Commission delegate; Tony Bukingham, UNODC and a host of others. In her opening remarks, Mrs Waziri said the essence of the meeting was to harmonise donor programmes in view of the tremendous amount of support and goodwill the commission has received from development partners since inception. She disclosed that the commission currently has a grant/credit portfolio of about $40 million from six bilateral and multilateral donors aside the non monetary support such as sharing intelligence report, information sharing, capacity building and a host of others. “The need for coordination is therefore essential and timely in view of the commission’s renewed and broadened scope in the fight against economic and financial crimes. The new vista in our activity comes with the need to build more strategic partnerships and more effective relations with our development partners as we seek to eradicate the scourge of economic and financial crimes in an effort to realize the vision of the President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua administration of making Nigeria one of the top 20 economies by 2020,” she said. She solicited for the continued support of the agencies in capacity building, publicity and advocacy, setting up of a database for Nigeria and National Forensic Laboratory even as she invited those who have not been involved in the fight against corruption to come on board. Also speaking at the meeting held last week, Secretary of the Commission, Emmanuel Akomaye said with the support EFCC has received, it has also been able to lend support to similar agencies in the sub-region in terms of training and capacity building, as some of them send their staff to EFCC to understudy its best practices. The highly interactive meeting also witnessed the presentation of Automated Donor Assistance Mechanism- Nigeria, ADAMN, by Farayi Nyamadzawo. ADAMN is internet-based tool for coordinating technical assistance in Nigeria in the areas of anti-corruption, human trafficking, smuggling and other forms of crimes.
