Brazilian striker Robinho made a shock move to Manchester City from Real Madrid on a four year deal for £32.5m after Chelsea were favourites to sign the want-away striker.
No surprise though after the second Manchester club was bought over by Abu Dhabi United Group, a consortium of an Arab Emirates family who have set a Champions League qualifying target for next season.
The group also wanted to hijack the move of Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United though the former Spurs man is known to want Champions League football, which City cannot offer at least for now.
Berbatov completed his protracted £30.75m move from White Hart Lane to Old Trafford with Spurs getting £7m rated Frazier Campbell on a season long loan in exchange, adding to the signings of Russian striker Roman Pavluchenko and Verdan Corluka from Manchester City.
Other deals that were wrapped up just before midnight on Monday were injury prone Loius Saha from Manchester United to Everton and Andriy Voronin from Liverpool to Hertha Berlin on a season long loan.
Everton also broke its transfer record to bring in Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini for £15m from Standard Liege while Newcastle United brought in Deportivo La Coruna striker Xisco on a five year deal for £5.7m as well as Ignatio Gonzalez on a season long loan from Valencia.
In Italy, Inter Milan completed the signings of FC Porto wizard Ricardo Quaresma and a certain Del Piero from Treviso, not the Alessandro we all know from Juventus but Jago from Treviso in the lower division.
