Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi's TSG Hoffenheim surrendered top spot in the German Bundesliga to Schalke while defending champions Bayern Munich cruised to its first win of the season, three games in.
In a high scoring weekend, Hoffenheim fell to a 5-2 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen in an entertaining affair at the Bay Arena to allow Schalke take over top spot with seven points courtesy of a 1-0 win over city rivals Vfl Bochum.
Bayern Munich moved closer to the leaders with a 4-1 success over Hertha Berlin at the Allianz Arena with Hertha now without Olympic silver medal winner Solomon Okoronkwo as he was sold to Russian club Saturn.
In other matches, Dortmund continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win at Energie Cottbus to stay second behind Schalke on goal difference while Werder Bremen fell to a 3-2 reverse at Borussia Monchengladbach and remain without a win this season.
Hamburg won 4-2 at Arminia Bielefeld as life without Rafael van Der Vaart continued on a good note for Hamburg while Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt shared a 2-2 draw at the Volkswagen Arena.
