Jose Mourinho began his Serie A reign with Italian back to back league champions Inter Milan with a 1-1 draw away at Sampdoria while AC Milan fell to a shock 2-1 home loss to newly promoted Bologna.
At the Luigi Ferraris, Inter took the lead through Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the first half but Gennaro Delvecchio restored parity early in the second half for the hosts.
Inter's city rivals Milan had a worse start to the season with the loss to Bologna despite newcomers Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko, on as a substitute, making their competitive debut for Milan.
The trail continued at the Olimpico where last season's runner-up AS Roma was held to a 1-1 draw by Napoli who equalised through Marek Hamsik minutes after having Fabiano Santacroce sent off.
Also at the Artemio Franchi, Fiorentina and Juventus played out a 1-1 draw with Pavel Nedved's first half opener cancelled out by Alberto Gilardino after the Viola had a man sent off.
The big winners however were Lazio and Udinese. Lazio came from a goal down to thrash Cagliari 4-1 away from home with a brace from new signing Mauro Zarate while another brace from Antonio di Natale helped Udinese to a 3-1 win over Palermo.
