Uche Brothers Win in La Liga Opener

The clubs of the Uche brothers on Sunday night claimed away victories on the opening weekend of the Spanish Primera Liga just as title favourites Barcelona were humbled by a newly promoted side.

Ikechukwu Uche's Getafe ground out a 2-1 win away at newly promoted Sporting Gijon while Kalu Uche's Almeria was one better with a 3-1 win at Athletic Bilbao though both players did not score.

The shock of the weekend however was Barcelona's 1-0 loss at newly promoted Numancia, bringing back ill memories of last season which saw the Catalan giants humbled every other weekend in the league. Barcelona have also not scored in the last six La Liga matches from last season.

Defending league champions Real Madrid were also beaten but the 2-1 loss at Deportivo la Coruna was no shock with the poor record of Real at the Riazor where it has now been beaten consecutively in the last six seasons and has not won since 1991.

Other top clubs Sevilla and Villarreal were held to 1-1 draws at Racing Santander and Osasuna respectively while Atletico Madrid romped to the league table summit with a 4-0 thrashing of newly promoted Malaga; Diego Forlan scored two goals for the side.
