Nigeria's U-17 national team, the Golden Eaglets on Saturday in Port Harcourt began its quest towards the African U-17 Championships with a 2-0 win over neighbouring Benin Republic.
A goal in each half secured victory for the Alphonsus Dike led side which is aiming to replicate the success of the last set of players under late Yemi Tella, winning the African and World titles in 2007.
In other first leg matches played, Rwanda picked a vital 2-1 away win at Sudan while South Africa was shocked 1-0 by visiting Malawi. Black Starlets of Ghana eased to a 3-0 win over Libya while Cameroun defeated Gabon 2-0 in Yaounde just as Mali pipped Niger 1-0 in Bamako.
Second leg matches of the first round qualifiers will hold in a fortnight.
