Nigerian international Yakubu Aiyegbeni had a torrid Saturday afternoon at Goodison Park as his Everton club was well beaten 3-0 by visiting Portsmouth with goals from Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch.
Portsmouth first two goals came just when Everton looked more likely to score and after Johnson's goal, the Toffees saw its top scorer Aiyegbeni's penalty saved by David James two minutes into the second half.
However, Pompey still have James to thank as he saved further efforts from Aiyegbeni, Mikel Arteta and Jayleon Lescott while substitute Victor Anichebe made his first appearance for Everton since returning from the Olympics.
The win was the first this season for Pompey who gave John Utaka a 14 minute run-out in place of scorer Jermain Defoe, while Nwankwo Kanu was not listed due to injury.
In other matches played on Saturday afternoon, Wigan Athletic went goal riot at newly promoted Hull City with the Latics coming out 5-0 winners with two goals from on loan Egyptian Amr Zaki.
At Upton Park, West Ham won a dramatic encounter against Blackburn Rovers 4-1 with two late goals from Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole ending hopes of a draw for Rovers who pulled a goal back through Jason Roberts in the first half only for the striker to lose a great chance to eqaulise at 2-1 from a second half penalty.
Middlesbrough did all the scoring in the 2-1 win over Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke City with Afonso Alves and Tuncay Sanli's goals wiping the disappointment of Justin Hoyte's own goal and Stuart Downing's penalty miss.
The afternoon was completed with a goalless draw at Reebok Stadium between Bolton Wanderers and Westbromwich-Albion while the game between Manchester United and Fulham has been postponed following United's European Super Cup match in Monaco against FC Zenit St Petersburg on Friday night.
However, Chelsea remains on top of the league table with six points from two games ahead of the Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur that just completed the signing of Russian striker Roman Pavluchenko from Spartak Moscow; a move that could facilitate Dimitar Berbatov's protracted transfer to Manchester United.
