Following its first ever UEFA Cup triumph in Manchester back in May against Scottish side Rangers, FC Zenit St Petersburg added the European Super Cup to its collection with a 2-1 win over Manchester United on Friday night.
The match, played at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco, saw the Russian league champions continue its giant killing run of last season with goals from Pavel Progrebnyak late in the first half and Danny early in the second half, making Nemanja Vidic's strike late on a mere consolation for the Red Devils who had Paul Scholes sent off in stoppage time.
The wins ensures FC Zenit will represent Europe at the World Club Championship later this year in Japan while United will now concentrate on retaining the Premier League and Champions League crown starting at home against archrivals Liverpool and Villarreal in the respective competitions.
The loss for the Old Trafford side was the second at this stage after a 1-0 defeat to SS Lazio in 1999 despite playing with a full strenght squad this time around.
