Another unknown Nigerian has shot into the spotlight just like Kayode Odejayi did against Chelsea last season as the Carling Cup in England saw the exit of three Premier League sides in yesternight's encounters.
Playing with a bandage to protect 12 stitches to a head wound suffered in league action, Adebayo Akinfenwa scored twice in the first half for Northampton as the League One side defeated 10-man Bolton Wanderers, starring debutante Daniel Shittu, 2-1.
Bolton was joined by Premier League new boys Hull City that lost 2-1 after extra time to Championship side Swansea while West Brom's poor start to the season continued with a 3-1 extra time loss at Hartlepool.
Newcastle United was without the injured Obafemi Martins as the Magpies overcame a valiant Coventry City 3-2 after extra time with a James Milner brace and Michael Owen winner.
Obagoal was replaced in the Magpies 1-0 win over Bolton in the Premier League over the weekend and will now miss Nigeria's World and Nations Cup Qualifier against South Africa on September 6.
In other Carling Cup matches played, Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke City fielded a second string side in its 3-2 win away at Cheltenham while Middlesbrough swept past Yeovil Town 5-1 with Egyptian striker Mido opening the floodgate for Gareth Southgate's side.
