Man U Edge Portsmouth in Premier League

Champions Manchester United gained its first win of the new season with a 1-0 victory over FA Cup champions Portsmouth with midfielder Darren Fletcher getting the lone goal midway through the first half.

The win lifts the Red Devils up to the top half of the table ahead of Friday night's European Super Cup encounter against UEFA Cup champions Zenit St. Petersburg at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco.

At Fratton Park, the return of Carlos Tevez who suffered a family bereavement to miss the draw against Newcastle was in the thick of the move that set-up Fletcher to flick home past David James.

Portsmouth though had its chances with Papa Bouba Diop sending a shot just wide seconds into the match but the Red Devils gained control of the match after getting the goal.

Portsmouth with the loss is rooted to the bottom of the league table with no point and no goal from two games with Everton next up for Pompey in the league.
