Real Madrid on Sunday night won the Spanish Super Cup following a dramatic 4-2 win over Valencia that saw El-Merengues reduced to nine men with the sending off of Dutchmen Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rafael van der Vaart just signed from Hamburg.

Before Van der Vaart's first half red card, David Silva had given Los Che the lead and a 4-2 aggregate lead with his team's first true effort on goal and Valencia looked on its way to Super Cup glory.

van Nistelrooy equalised soon after the restart for Real from the penalty spot before Sergio Ramos and Rubén de la Red inbetween van Nistelrooy's red card made it 3-1 for Real.

Gonzalo Higuaín then made it 4-1 in stoppage time, latching on to a poor back pass though there was still time enough for substitute Fernando Morientes to pull a consolation for the disappointing Valencia.

In the Italian Super Cup, Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan but Roma equalised through Daniele de Rossi only for Mario Balotelli to score an 84th minute second for Inter.

With the goal sparking wild celebrations in the San Siro, Roma put a quiet on the home fans when Mirko Vucinic equalised in the 89th minute to send the game into extratime; an extratime that produced no further goals.

Roma were then in a 3-2 lead in the penalties; having started the spot kicks, when Inter's Dejan Stankovic crashed his kick off the bar. With Roma leading 4-3 after de Rossi and Maxwell scored for Roma and Inter, captain of the capital side Francesco Totti saw his potential winning penalty crash off the bar.

The dramatic penalty comeback was complete when Juan's was saved by Inter keeper Julio Cesar and Javier Zanetti made no mistake from the spot to win Mourinho's first trophy of the season and set the tone for the new Serie A season that kicks off this weekend.
