Unlike last weekend's 4-0 brush aside of Portsmouth, league leaders Chelsea was made to work hard for a 1-0 win by Wigan Athletic with new signing Deco getting his second of the season with a well taken free kick.
It however had looked like an easy afternoon for the Blues when Deco sailed his free kick into goal after just four minutes but the goal only brought out a valiant Wigan side in search of an equaliser that almost came immediately after conceding but Petr Cech was on hand to save from Wilson Palacios.
Palacios again tested Cech with a looping ball that almost caught the Czech out of his goal while Egyptian loanee Amr Zaki had his chances of getting a goal back for the Latics while substitute Olivier Kapo saw another effort saved by the inspired Cech.
At the City Stadium, Manchester City eased to a 3-0 win over West Ham who had Mark Noble sent off earlier in the first half, courtesy of second half goals from Danny Sturridge and a brace from Elano.
Chelsea now top with six points ahead of Liverpool on goal difference, Blackburn Rovers, newly promoted Hull City and Newcastle United follow with four points while Arsenal; 1-0 losers at Fulham, is down at 13th with three points.
FA Cup champions Portsmouth will host league defending champions Manchester United Monday night at Fratton Park with Pompey bottom of the table with no points and the Red Devils 16th with one point.
