Fashion Designers and Craft makers (FDC) ‘Young Designer Awards’ has announced the search for grass roots UK Young designers from ages 9-25 years who have excelled creatively and have the potential to be the next big stars of the international fashion stage to take part in this year’s award this Autumn in the West End of London. Registeration is currently going on for young designers who wish to participate.
FDC Young Designer Awards award was founded by London based Knitwear Designer, Joanna Marcella whose aim is to increase the number and visibility of young and exceptionally gifted multi-cultural designers, and to encourage them to reach their true potential and become as high profile as, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen or Vivienne Westwood. Joanna says, “There are some extremely talented young people in our community, who deserve this opportunity. This year our designers will be given the theme of ‘Hollywood Glamour’ as part of their brief to produce an Avant-Garde outfit, we know they can rise to the challenge and produce the most flamboyant garments”. As well as the Designer of the Year Award a very special FashionHow International Designer Award will be presented by Christie Dinham CEO of FashionHow USA to an extremely talented designer. The FDC Young Designer Awards and the FashionHow international Designer Award aim to nurture raw talent, and encourage outstanding young people to follow their dreams by offering the chance of a successful place in the fashion world. Being selected for the award is just the beginning, after the ceremony a support system that addresses all aspects of a developing career is set in motion. The winner has the opportunity to learn about the business, meet key people and finesse his or her skills, as well as showcasing a debut collection in New York Fashion Week, to an audience of international fashion journalists, photographers and buyers. Joanna continues, "This is the only fashion design awards in the UK that has given young British Designers, who are still studying for their fashion degrees, an opportunity to showcase in New York Fashion Week and Caribbean Fashion Week. It is such a shame that we do not get the same support from companies here in the UK. This project is a unique and precious gem, we urge those who can, individuals and companies, to support us in anyway they can, to make the FDC Young Designer Awards a world wide project. Due to the Success of FDC Young Designer Awards we have had so much interest from older designers. So, we will be launching the Willbaforce Design Award for older designers who have design experience, a fashion label or a fashion house. This award gives each designer an opportunity to demonstrate their technical design skills and to express their creativity, whilst producing a commercial garment that could be sold on the high street. The winner will receive business support and development (worth £1000) and a prize of £200 to go towards personal development within the fashion industry from Jennifer Williams-Baffoe (coordinator of the Sew East Project).
