Yakubu Aiyegbeni made it two goals in two games with Everton's second in the Toffees 2-1 win away at newly promoted West Brom who failed to capitalise on their first half domination of the encounter.
Leon Osman had given Everton the lead just after the hour mark before Aiyegbeni's in the 76th minute while Roman Bednar got a consolation from the penalty spot late in the match.
At Anfield, Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League for the meantime with a late comeback win over Middlesbrough with captain Steven Gerrard grabbing the winner for the Reds in stoppage time.
Egyptian striker Mido scored the opener with 20 minutes to play but Boro defender Emmanuel Pogaterz scored an own goal in the 86th minute off Jamie Carragher's cross to hand Rafael Benitez's men a life line.
Gerrard made sure the visitors pay for their momentary loss of concentration when he smashed in the winner on the dot of the 90 to send Liverpool to the Premier League summit.
Liverpool will remain top should Arsenal fail to win away at London neighbours Fulham later on Saturday and Chelsea fail to win at Wigan Athletic on Sunday.
Arsenal's North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur continued its poor start to the season with a 2-1 home loss to Sunderland with goals from Kieran Richardson in the 55th and Djibril Cisse, on loan from Marseille, in the 83rd minute to cancel out Jermain Jenas' equaliser in the 76th minute for Spurs. Again Dimitar Berbatov was left on the Spurs bench as the Bulgarian continues to be linked to Manchester United and manager Juande Ramos stating the striker is not focused at th moment.
The late drama played out also at Brittania Stadium where newly promoted Stoke City came out 3-2 winners over Gabriel Agbonlahor's Aston Villa with a stoppage time winner from Mamady Sidibe.
Liam Lawrence had given Seyi Olofinjana's Stoke a first half lead from the penalty spot before John carew got his second in as many games with 20 minutes to play.
Ricardo Fuller got a frenzied last 10 minutes going to put Stoke back in front but Martin Laursen seemed to have made up for giving the first half penalty with an 84th minute equaliser before Sidibe secured the win for the home side.
Meanwhile at Ewood Park, new boys Hull City gained a valuable 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers, coming from a Jason Roberts goal in the 39th minute through Richard Garcia just before half time.
Finally, Newcastle United maintained a good start to the season with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers courtesy of a Michael Owen header in the 71st. Bolton captain Kevin Nolan had missed a penalty earlier in the second half.
Premier League defending champions Manchester United play at FA Cup winners on Monday night while Chelsea will travel to Wigan Athletic on Sunday looking to consolidate on the 4-0 win over Pompey last weekend.
