Arsenal have made a shock signing by adding French defender Mikael Silvestre to its ranks from archrivals Manchester United for an undisclosed fee on a two year contract.
The move is the first by a player to either club in over 21 years when Viv Anderson left Arsenal for Manchester United in 1987 while Brian Kidd was the last player to move from Old Trafford to the North London club in 1974.
Silvestre, who spent nine years with the Red Devils after joining from Inter Milan, had been strongly linked with a move to local rivals Manchester City till the 11th hour when Arsenal came into the picture.
Meanwhile, AC Milan look close to sealing a return to the Serie A; and the club, for Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko who has had a nightmare two seasons in the Premier league after a £30m arrival from AC Milan.
