Aba Elephants, Enyimba on Sunday evening defeated Congolese club TP Mazembe 2-0 at the Aba Township Stadium to go top of Group B with six points in the CAF Champions League.
After missing a penalty in the first half, though from replays the penalty should not have been given, Eze Otorogu made up for the miss with the opener midway through the second half as he beat the offside trap of the Congolese club.
Enyimba wrapped up the points with Steve Worgu's 12th of the competition in the closing minutes of the match to put Enyimba one point ahead of Al-Hilal that drew 1-1 at home to Coton Sport of Caemroun on Friday though the Sudanese side remains unbeaten.
The Congolese side should have taken the lead shortly after the penalty miss by Enyimba but the TP Mazembe striker shot over the bar after going round Enyimba goalkeeper Rabo Saminou.
Enyimba next match in the group comes up at the final weekend of August with a return trip to Kinshasha to face TP Mazembe while Al-Hilal will look to protect its unbeaten record when it travels to play Coton Sport.
In Group A, Al-Ahly took a commanding step towards the semi-finals with a last gasp 2-1 win at FC Dynamos of Zimbabwe with Mohammed Abou Treka scoring the winner with the last touch of the match.
Ahly now tops the group with seven points, three ahead of Cairo archrivals Zamalek that was held to a goalless draw at home by bottom side ASEC Mimosas of Cote D'Ivoire that has two points now. Dynamos is sandwiched between the former African champions in third place with three points. Quote this article on your site | Views: 541 | Print | E-mail
