A masterclass display from a Luiz Felipe Scolari's Chelsea side was too much for Portsmouth to handle as the Blues romped to a 4-0 demolition of the FA Cup champions with new signing Deco sealing the tie with a spectacular curler.

From the first whistle it was all Chelsea that started with only Nicholas Anelka upfront and Joe Cole put the Londoners ahead off a one time pass from Michael Ballack before Anelka made it 2-0 in the 26th minute courtesy of good interplay between Deco and fellow new signing Jose Bosingwa.

Frank Lampard, now the highest paid player in England at £151,000, blasted home a third for Chelsea on the stroke of halftime from the penalty spot after Sylvain Distin handle Joe Cole's cross in the Pompey area.

The second half saw little to show any glimmer of a Portsmouth fight back as Chelsea put the game in cruise control and duly capped the afternoon with a spectacular swerving fourth from Deco.

The win puts Portsmouth, that did not feature John Utaka or Kanu, bottom of the Premier League for now while Chelsea go top ahead of Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers.

Champions Manchester United completed the opening round of fixtures with a shock 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United with Obafemi Martins opening scores with a header only for Darren Fletcher to equalise two minutes after.

The Red Devils had defeated Newcastle 6-1 in the same fixture last season though it came at the start of Kevin Keegan's return as the club's manager, going on to lead the Magpies away from the relegation waters into midtable safety.

Before then, Gabriel Abonlahor scored a seven minute hat trick in the second half to lead Aston Villa to a 4-2 win over Manchester City after John Carew put the Villans in front.
