Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mrs. Farida Waziri has called for closer ties and concerted efforts among stakeholders geared towards preventive measures in the fight against economic crimes and corruption.
She made the call Friday, August 15 2008 at the commission’s Training and Research Institute,(TRI) Karu, Abuja during the passing out parade of some staff of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who had undergone a two –phased four week course on Advance Investigation and General Techniques of Prosecution. “Prevention is very crucial in crime fighting because I always liken it to a case of murder where if not prevented would end in prosecution of the culprit without bringing back the dead victim”, she stressed. She congratulated the participants for successfully completing their training as well as the management of the Corp, for placing importance on training which she said was necessary for a vibrant and productive war on corruption. The EFCC boss said that the commission had put in place plans to undertake a nationwide anti- corruption campaign that will require some inputs from the NSCDC. While acknowledging an existing robust rapport between the two organizations, Waziri promised to continue the trend. “Let me assure the leadership and management of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp that under this Management, we shall continue this most fraternal of relationship. Our relationship is not random or accidental. Rather it is derived from a kindred agenda.” She said that EFCC was ready to assist NSCDC in fulfilling its noble mandates and enjoined the organization to continue its good work in ridding the country of corrupt elements. Earlier while introducing the participants to the Chairman, the Director of TRI, Dr. David Tukura observed that, the NSCDC had been one of the commission’s closest ally. He said that some of the convictions EFCC got in the area of vandalization of government’s properties were as a result of the Corp’s work.He praised the Commandant General of the NSCDC for his steadfastness and belief in the efficacy of prayers in his work In a short remark, the Commandant General of the Corp, Dr. Ade Abolurin , had said that training and manpower development was given much prominence in his organization adding that without it a law enforcement officer will always be bereft of ideas as crime had become sophisticated. He noted an improvement in the training programme of the corps as 450 officers were trained in 2008 compared to only 200 officers trained in 2007. Abolurin attributed most of the successes recorded by his organization to EFCC saying that a fallout of the first training his officers received from the EFCC in 2007, led to the creation of two units; Integrity Group and Anti Fraud Unit in the NSCDC. “If EFCC had not been encouraging us, we would have been disgraced .They support the work we do .They back our mandates with theirs.” He said that many successes recorded in the fight against petroleum pipeline vandalization and oil bunkerings were because of the prosecutorial backing by the EFCC. He praised the EFCC Executive Chairman whom she referred to as a woman of substance for showing a high level commitment to the war against corruption. “We are encouraged by you and we shall continue to work with you.” Speaking later with our correspondent, the course coordinator, Mr. Ibrahim Audu revealed that the advanced course was a follow up to the general investigation course held last year for most of the present officers. He said that the recent amended Act of the NSCDC, which empowers it to prosecute, demanded that officers of the Corp be trained on general techniques of prosecution. The course, which started on July 6, 2008, churned out 140 well-trained officers. Quote this article on your site | Views: 220 | Print | E-mail
