German Bundes-Liga favourites Bayern Munich began on a tragi-comedic note following a 2-2 draw at home to SV Hamburg, letting slip a two goal lead courtesy of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski.

Schweinsteiger had opened scoring in the 12th minute and podolski had doubled the advantage four minutes later from the penalty spot but Guerrero in the 25th minute and a Trochowski penalty just before the hour mark earned a point for former Tottenham manager Martin Jol.

The shock of sorts in the opening weekend came with the 3-0 away win of Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi's club, TSG Hoffenheim away at Energie Cottbus with a brace from Vedad Ibisevic either side of Demba Ba's goal.

The win put TSG on top by virtue of the away win ahead of Schalke that won by the same score at home to Hannover 96 with early goals from Marcelo Bordon and Kevin Kuranyi before the latter got his second in the 64th minute.

An outside contender for the league title, Werder Bremen were held to a 2-2 draw away at Arminia Bielefeld with a brace each from Bremen's Markus Rosenberg being replied by Bielefeld's Artur Wichniarek.

The other big match on Saturday saw Borussia Dortmund hold on to a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen as Stefan Kiessling's 83rd minute goal was not enough to make up three goals from Nelson Valdes, Florian Kringe and Neven Subotic. Patrick Helmes had equalised for the hosts in the 21st minute.

Other matches on the opening day saw Karlsruhe defeat Vfl Bochum 1-0 while Wolfsburg came from behind to defeat FC Cologne 2-1 in the Volkswagen Arena.

Sunday will see 2007 German champions Stuttgart begin its campaign away at newly promoted Borussia Monchengladbach while Eintract Frankfurt hosts capital club Hertha Berlin also on Sunday.
