Oluwakemisola Olisemeka, a.k.a Kemistry, spits fire on the mic. She's is one of the hottest female rappers of our time. Apart from having a total rock star attitude on stage with the likes of Sasha, Blaze, Zeal and the lot at the Tetmosol Girl Power show early in 2007, she is really the loveliest host in the studio. The melodramatic tone of her voice has wooed many to her Afternoon Drive show with Kemistry on Rhythm 93.7fm.
A Mass Media/Broadcast Journalism graduate of the Hampton University, Kemistry juggles being an on-air personality and lacing beats with lyrics. She is currently working on her first album. On how she joggles both.... "Since I no longer do the afternoon drive I have more than enough time to record my tracks as well I do my 5hrs a week on radio. Everything is working out better than I expected."
The album, titled Kemistry 101, is a basic introduction to her life and her rap talent discovered in 2003 “I am very proud of the way the album turned out.” she says “ ITS HOT”. There's a single from the Album called 'Shake', featuring Terry G. I'm sure you've heard it on radio. Yeah....that's Kemistry.
She describes her style as "Lauryn Hill meets Foxy Brown with some Naomi Diva to it... “I like to think of myself as Hip Hop's African Diva".
Born in Lagos, Nigeria to Ambassador and Mrs. K.O Olisemeka, the world is her oyster....”I have lived in China, Japan, Canada, France, England, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Burkina Faso, South Africa, U.S.A.” Living around the world is the best thing about her life, as it reflects her personality and lifestyle, “It made me more tolerable of people and less judgmental in that we all the same worldwide. I get along with almost everybody. It also made me a restless soul because now, I cant stay in one place for more than 3 - 4 years without feeling stifled.”
However, the greatest influence for her kind of music, she says, comes from New York "I am a New Yorker at heart” she informs. Hip hop came from there so, I will say NY is my biggest influence. Also Slick Rick, Lauryn Hill, DMX, Jay-Z, Foxy Brown's Ill nana, Nas, Rap music between 88-92 (Rakim, Salt-n-Pepa etc.)
Dismissing the common notion of rebellion and irresponsibility, associated with rap as a case of ignorance, Kemi informs, “rap is meant to teach and open the minds of those who listen. Hip hop started in the Bronx and it’s original intent, which is my goal, is to teach, preach and elevate the minds of the masses”
In her opinion, the best Nigerian rap artist is Freestyle..“I love freestyle, that’s a rapping dude”
Kemistry loves playing video games, watching movies, traveling, hanging with her peeps and generally having a wild time with friends. Her ambition in life, she says is “to be bigger than Micheal Jackson and Oprah.”
For one whose attitude and strength is mostly compared to that of the ultimate catwalk Diva Naomi Campbell, Kemi’s greatest strength is the Almighty..... “I am in love with God because he has done abundantly above all I could ever ask or think. HE ROCKS MY WORLD.”
