Another Bridge Going Down… Print E-mail

ImageMany bridges and buildings are collapsing all over the country. Residents in various areas are only too glad that their respective governor and public officers are aware that there is a bridge or a building somewhere that needs to be repaired. So, all they need to do is wait for the governors to get around to it. Now imagine if the government was not aware that let’s say, third mainland bridge fell down and the residents had no hope and no date when the bridge will be fixed. That is the sort of thing that happened in Akute. The bridge that links the town to civilization is half collapsed, and it doesn't seem like the authorities in charge are aware.

Akute is located after Ojodu on the outskirts of Lagos, if you are traveling by road. iIf you want to use the maps, it is located in Ogun State. With the deplorable state of the roads in Akute, you would imagine that Akute were abandoned. This is not far from the truth as Akute could well be abandoned since neither the Lagos State government nor the Ogun State Government claim ownership of Akute. It is hardly surprising the level of flooding and dilapidated road structure in Akute.

The people of Akute have complained severally to no avail. They are being neglected by the States Government. Many of the residents of Akute work in Ikeja, Lagos Island, V/island and on the mainland; they were coping with the situation until recently, when part of the bridge collapsed, leaving only one usable lane, if it can be called that. Drivers in the opposing traffic have to wait until any of the other lanes on the opposite side is clear. Imagine Lagos motorists being patient enough to wait way for each other to pass, you can imagine the confusion and horrendous traffic that occurs on the roads in this part of town.

Ena Emurotu, a resident of Akute on vacation from the UK says “Akute is always like a village, with beautiful houses and the monstrous traffic that accompanies the location, and does not encourage visits from friends and loved ones. Life is not as easy as the earliest she returns home is 9pm. The residents of the Akute village are taking this opportunity to call on the Ogun State Government and the Lagos State Government to decide on who owns Akute, so that their bridge will be rebuilt and more attention will be paid to the roads in their city.
