A non-governmental and faith based organization, Jesus Club has advocated for the urgent commencement of a social security scheme to cater for unemployed Nigerians.
The organization unanimously agreed at its monthly meeting that the rising crime rate and current youth militancy in Nigeria are mostly due to the frustration experienced by Nigerians, especially youths due to Joblessness. “We believe that the time has come for the Nigeria Government to join her counter parts in Europe and other parts of the world to commence a social security scheme to pay the jobless in our society, in order to achieve a better society for all. It is very frustrating for an adult to live without an income, hence those that are jobless should be supported financially no matter how small.” Speaking in Abuja yesterday, the National Coordinator of Jesus Club, Evang. Esa Agbodo said; “Recently, the salaries and some allowances of the President, the Vice President and members of the National Assembly were increased. This is good because our leaders need to be paid well to carry out their functions effectively. On the contrary, it is lamentable that many jobless skilled Nigerians and graduates from higher institutions roam the streets daily seeking for scarce job opportunities without success. Even when they decide to use their skills to start a business, it is not easy because most times the Banks give impossible conditions for such starters.” Agbodo continued: “ Besides, the huge number of jobless youths has brought undue financial pressure on parents and this is largely responsible for the perpetuation of corrupt practices in both private and public offices in order to make ends meet.” Jesus Club stated that among other benefits when implemented,so many of the social vices and criminal activities experienced today will be highly curbed. Nigeria can borrow a leaf from the United Kingdom's 1911and 1995 social assistance system or othe similar laws all over the world to make the programme a success. It is also instructive to note that since former jobless Nigerians will have money to kick-start their lives, potent talents will be developed;purchasing power will be enhanced thereby having a good effect on the manufacturing sector and businesses in addition to the anticipated reduced crime rate that will eventually enhance local and foreign investments. "The programme can be implemented now in Nigeria irrespective of the cost implication because the advantages of this programme are more than the disadvantages on the long run.It is regretable that while other countries in the world are investing in building the capacities of their citizery, our citizens are incapacitated in several ways and this is inimical to national development." We therefore call on our dear President, His Excellency, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and members of the National Assembly to commence the process of enacting a Iaw to pay jobless Nigerians, starting from those who are skilled or graduates in various disciplines. Jesus Club is ready to contribute and mobilize resources to successfully implement the programme because poverty in Nigeria have turned many to corruption, prostitution, crime and other vices and unless something urgent is done to give the citizens hope, these vices may increase in the future. Nigeria is richly blessed with human and natural resources therefore her citizens should not be not be counted among frustrated people in the world, Agbodo concluded.
