Mrs Modupe Akintola, wife of Alhaji Ganiyu Adio Akintola, the kidnapped Sole Administrator of Ikosi/Ejinrin Local Council Development Authority near Epe, Lagos State, yesterday called on Nigeria’s President Umar Musa Yar’Adua and Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to help in securing the release of her husband from the hands of the abductors.

The aggrieved woman, a retired Headmistress, in a telephone interview yesterday, said since Akintola was whisked away from his official residence last Thursday, the family has not heard anything from either the kidnappers or Akintola himself. She said her husband, who clocked 70 years last March is just recovering from the shock of his first daughter’s death, Mrs. Iyabode Oyefeso, when the incident occurred adding that he had been on medications as prescribed by the doctor since the sad episode.

She said “That is why we are visibly worried because the man has been sustained by certain medications to prod his health since the death of our first daughter.  Now, we have not heard from him or the men that kidnapped him to know where he was taken to, what he eats or if they even give him any forms of  medications or not. So, I am really worried and I am becoming sick myself; Mrs Akintola said.

“Right now, I can only call on President Yar’Adu and Governor Fashola to please help us in asking for his release. We can’t even understand what is going on at the moment. I also appeal to the men that took my husband away to please tell the world what he did and why he had to be taken so that they can release him. We are suffering from the psychological trauma of not knowing his whereabouts and state of health.”

Akintola, a member of the Action Congress (AC), appointed as Sole Administrator by Governor Babatunde Fashola to hold sway till the October Local Government elections later this year was whisked away from his official residence in Ejinrin last Thursday about 11.00pm by five armed suspected to be members of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). Till present, his whereabouts is yet to be known.

A MEND official, Mr. John Timi had denied on phone at the weekend that the militant group had anything to do with the kidnap of Alhaji Ganiyu Adio Akintola. He said MEND has no operational offices in Lagos and our operations have always been limited to the Niger-Delta area. We reject any attempt to link MEND with the Lagos incidence,“’ Timi said late night on Saturday.
