Ibori at 50, no celebrations....
Sunday, 03 August 2008
Chief James Onanefe Ibori, the former Delta State Governor has chosen not to celebrate his 50th birthday. Quite a dissapointment that would be for the committe of friends, who have worked for weeks towards making the celebrations very grand.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Tony Eluemunor, Ibori said, “Age fifty is very significant in the life of a man. It is a veritable landmark. Even in the biblical days, it was so. It was the year of jubilee, which signified freedom and emancipation. So as I look back and reflect on the past years, I have every reason to give thanks to the Almighty God for his mercy and kindness".
“Instead of celebrating with me as I turn 50 on Monday 4th of August 2008, I strongly urge you to join me in deep reflection and prayers. Please, do not relent in your prayers for me and my immediate family as well as my political associates. Also, please remember our nation Nigeria, and Delta state in your prayers as we all, you and I, should re-dedicate ourselves to the service of our motherland and uplift all her children", he added
The rest of the statement;
“Since the past one year after my tenure as Governor of Delta State, I have watched with silence the unfolding events around me. I have also watched with deep silence the negative media publicity orchestrated by people who have sworn that I shall know no peace. Often, they have ascribed to me things I know nothing about, just like the ownership of the building that collapsed in Abuja last Tuesday, which they ascribed to me – for no reason- just to smear my family name. As challenging as this is, I have elected to view it as one of the sacrifices of post-public service life in Nigeria. It is unfortunate though that innocent Nigerians may be deceived by these lies from people of shallow consciences."
“I am not about to join issues with my detractors who have been crying for my crucifixion – just because Delta state or national politics have not gone their way. But as politics is a game of ideas and numbers, and those that win in politics are those whom the largest number of the citizens support and vote for, I enjoy internal peace, the peace of a man who did his best within the limits of his God-given ability to bring the dividends of democratic governance to bear on the good people of Delta State and the nation. I consider it at variance with modesty and humility, the bedrock of my upbringing, to begin to sing the songs of my achievements within the eight years I was governor of Delta State; yet vestiges of my passionate drive for human and infrastructural development in the state will ever remain. The records are there, but I leave that issue to posterity to judge. On leaving office as governor, I said on my own volition that I have forgiven anybody that ever wronged me, and asked those I must have wronged to please forgive me. This is the path of peace, so my stance has not changed in any way.
“I must use this opportunity to thank everyone who has stood up for me in my challenging moments: friends, associates and well-wishers across the political party lines, members of my political family in the PDP both at the national and state levels, the Governor of Delta State and his cabinet, and indeed, the good people of Delta state. To every one who has supported me in prayers and through calls and text messages, I want to say thank you all and God bless you.
“Once again, I thank you for your support; I am confident that with the grace of God, surely, victory is certain, no matter the vicissitudes of life we may be facing today, whether as individuals, Delta state or the Nigerian nation. This I believe.”
