First Lady Hajia Turai Yar'Adua in the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State launched the National Women Coalition on HIV/AIDS (NAWOCA) for the South South zone as part of the drive to tackle the disease among vulnerable groups in the region.
Speaking on the occasion, Hajia Yar'Adua said it has been her resolve since she became First Lady to raise the activities aimed at promoting prevention of the dreaded virus and providing support to those already infected.
She said NAWOCA was established to address the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa and so far the programme is gaining ground in Nigeria with establishment of chapters in State and Local Governemt levels, adding that it would soon become available at the Ward level as well.
Hajia Yar'Adua also urged the National Agency for Control of HIV/AIDS (NACA) along with other agencies involved in the fight against the disease to assist First Ladies in various States in the establishment of State chapters of NAWOCA.
Speaking also at the occasion, Director General of NACA Prof. Babatunde Oshotimehin said efforts have been intensified in the fight against HIV/AIDS and so far about 269,000 persons receive free HIV/AIDS treatment up from only 10,000 in 2002.
