Stakeholders, philosophers, writers, opinion leaders and the bus-stop parliamentarians would always say that education is the key. But a look at the Nigerian parlance, illiteracy is the key, as many Nigerian children of school age are not into school. Not that they don’t want to be in school, but they are not into school because of the ineptitude of the Nigerian government to provide quality education for its citizens. And one wonders how the Nigerian government was going to achieve the much-touted Universal Primary Basic Education before 2020.
Take a look on the streets and hide your face in shame, if you are a humanist. It’s a pity tale and a crying shame, on how the Nigerian children carry wares of different kinds, mainly the Nigerian children of the poor, when their mates are in the school, planning for the future. This trend is occasioned by the crying shame and mindless habit of the Federal Government of Nigeria by not paying attention to the education system. And this has culminated to the Nigerian teachers not finding it easy anymore to teach the Nigerian children. Who would like to work on a bare foot? Recently, the Nigerian teachers embarked on strike just for the simple token they are asking from the Federal Government, otherwise called the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS). When this led to teachers strike, many Nigerian children who had no option were subjected to forceful treading and hawking on the streets looking dirty, weary and unkempt. The girl-child in this business is always abused by the male street-urchins, sexually. What a pity! And this has left a lot of the girl-children become sudden pregnant below the universal age of 18 human beings are expected to be taken serious in the business of things in this glebe. It was the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) who said in May 2005 that over 7.3 million Nigerian children don’t go to school. Being an ugly trend in Nigeria, the lack of formal education.
