The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has joined the voices calling for the teachers to end their nationwide strike; in its fourth week, and hold talks towards meeting their demands instead.
This was made known after a closed door meeting between the PDP leadership and that of the Nigeria Union of Teachers at the Party's national secretariat with the PDP Chairman Prince Vincent Ogbulafor promising to mediate with necessary authorities in pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing embarrassing situation.
Speaking after the meeting, NUT Deputy National President Chief Onem Nelson stated the strike will not be called off until concrete solution is reached, adding the crisis could require a political solution with stakeholders convened to delibrate on the matter.
He went further to state that the NUT made it known to the PDP leadership in the meeting that the strike will be called off when the Federal Government issues a circular enabling the Teachers Salary Structure.
Nelson therefore urged that the PDP Chairman persuade the President Umar Yar'Adua to pass the circular effecting the TSS, for the sake of the children and the education sector as a whole, since it was appropriated in this year's budget.
