Earlier at the State House, Abuja, the Governor had held a joint press conference with Hon. Minister for Transportation Dr Mrs Diezanne Allison- Madueke who announced that as a way of decongesting all federal access roads leading to and within the Lagos Port Complex, the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the suspension of 16 Tank Farms from using the Lagos bays for discharging their petroleum products. The Council affirmed that the 16 Tank Farms affected "failed to meet the minimum conditions and requirements for provision of Holding Bay and associated facilities are suspended from using Nigerian Ports Authority for discharging their vessels, until they provide requisite facilities and when such firms comply, their cases would be referred to the Minister of Transportation for re-approval." The Council also banned the creation of new Tank Farms in the vicinity of the Lagos ports until the issue is re-visited. Minister of Transportation, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke told journalists that the suspension of the 16 Tank Farms became necessary because of the menace of articulated tankers. She said the activities of the tank farms had encouraged drivers of articulated tankers to congest access roads to the ports, thereby impacting negatively on other businesses in the area. The suspension would remain in effect till the operators of such tank farms built their independent holding bays to accommodate vehicles meant to load products from them. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, explained that the measures became necessary as drivers of the articulated vehicles had defied other measures to decongest the access roads around the ports, pointing out that the tank farms and their customers had refused to relocate to a terminal provided for them. The Governor thanked President Yar’adua and the Hon Minister for Transportation for giving a listening ear to the yearning of the State Government to address the lingering problem of traffic jam around the ports. According to the Governor, the development presents an opportunity for a refreshing engagement between States and the government at the Centre to address the problems of the people. Governor Fashola said the FEC’s decision being a response to a problem that affects everyone should be seen in a positive light, adding that the Tank farm operators should utilize better the tanker terminus built for them and the opportunities provided by modern telecommunication facilities to call tankers due for loading. The Governor was accompanied at the press briefing by Hon. Commissioner for Transportation Professor Bamidele Badejo, Environment, Dr Muiz Banire and Waterfront Development, Prince Adesegun Oniru.
