Eight applicants reportedly died at the immigration recruitment exercise in Kaduna State last week. But controversy trailed the deaths as the state's immigration authorities insist that only one person died. Yusuf.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) finds the high toll alarming, disgusting and preposterous. We reject the explanations given by the Kaduna immigration authorities regarding reasons behind the deaths. The state's director of immigrations, Yusuf Muhammed Bawa allegedly said that it was normal for applicants to die during recruitment. We condemn this statement as careless, insolent and sadistic. It is unfortunate if immigration recruitment exercise is designed to cause death. Nigerians deserve institutions which promote life and hope, not death and frustration.

MURIC believes that there is more to the tragedy than meets the eye. A victim who was revived in the hospital complained that nobody died during the race and that death occurred because after the race, invigilators arrived four hours behind schedule. Some collapsed and died after the 4-hour-wait due to fatigue and hunger. This caused general pandemonium as applicants struggled to escape from the stadium. More applicants reportedly died in the ensuing stampede.

Kaduna immigration authorities must therefore be held responsible for criminal negligence, professional incompetence and absconding from duty. Nigerian authorities must begin to respect the dignity and sanctity of human life. Outsiders will not respect us if we do not value our own lives. MURIC charges the National Assembly as well as the Kaduna State House of Assembly to beam its searchlight on Kaduna immigrations with a view to unearthing the truth. Those found culpable must be made scapegoats. People who toy with the lives of our youths must be shown the way out of our institutions.

Dr. Is-haq Akintola
DIRECTOR, MURIC
