Nigeria's representative in this season's CAF Champions League, Enyimba yesterday night in Khartoum were beaten 3-2 by Sudanese champions Al-Hilal as Africa's elite club competition kicked off.
The Aba Elephants had taken the lead midway through the first half through Cletus Itodo but the Sudanese equalised before halftime through a penalty converted by the Al-Hilal captain after 42 minutes.
Al-Hilal then took the lead through Nigerian import and former Enyimba player Yusuf Mohammed immediately after the restart. That was followed by the sending off of Okey Odita just after the hour mark.
The game's dramatic finish began in the 86th minute when Enyimba pulled back on level terms through Stephen Worgu; his 10th goal in this campaign, before another Nigerian import, Ifeanyi Onigbo got a last gasp winner for last season's semifinalist.
Enyimba will next play Coton Sport of Cameroun in the Aba Township Stadium in the first weekend of August. Coton Sport meanwhile began their campaign this season with a lone goal win at home to TP Mazembe of Congo.
Matches in Group A played on Sunday saw Al-Ahly defeat fierce Cairo rivals Zamalek 2-1 while Zimbabwe's Dynamos shares top spot with the 2006 champions following a similar result at home to ASEC Mimosas of Cote D'Ivoire.
