This is to bring the attention of the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola to the barbaric practice of Oro worshippers in Ikorodu town. During the month of May and June every year, women are forced to remain indoors for two days. The last incident happened Tuesday, June 3rd on my way to work when a man blocked our car while driving towards the main street of the town on my way to Ikeja where I work.
I was lucky because over the years women who have inadvertently stepped out of their homes are killed or beaten by the Oro worshippers who consist of whip wielding boys. They do not announce the commencement of the Oro on the mass media and travelers on the interstate routes have innocently fallen victims. In May 2008, female students writing their WAEC/Neco exams had to stay within the examination centers for two nights because they couldn’t go to their homes. One can imagine the risk these girls were exposed to Some years back a pregnant woman whose labour started during one of these Oro night bleed to death because the family couldn’t take her hospital! I have over the years raised this issue in the media. When the Oba of Ikorodu was asked why such archaic practice was still being allowed in the face of civilization, his comment was for people not comfortable with the tradition to leave his domain. I think the time to call the Oba of Ikorodu and his cohorts to order is now. Some religious bodies and other interest group have started campaigning for their female members to disregard such illegal directives and go about their normal businesses. I foresee a situation where a total breakdown of law and order is inevitable. I have also sent this story to the BBC and CNN’s crew for coverage next year. My contact in the BBC, Stephen Sackur who I meet in Lagos sometime ago during the interview session with Wole Soyinka has promised to give it the needed coverage. Based on the deluge of emails seeking further information, I am confident that Lagos would be in the world news by next year for the wrong reasons. The so called Mega City project of this present administration is a sham to say the least. I am using this opportunity to alert the governor and it would be a great relief if the Governor use his good office and ensure the rule of law prevails in this part of Lagos The member of the federal house of representative representing Ikorodu constituency, Abike Dabiri Eruwa is aware of this injustice. She was asked to intervene many years ago by some journalists who interviewed her when this matter was raised. She kept mute in order not to offend the powers that be because of her inordinate ambition for a second term in office. One can imagine the level of hypocrisies of our politicians. She is one of the arrow heads of the freedom of information bill presently My sincere and final opinion is that such obnoxious practices should not be mentioned within civilized societies. Lagos can not have a parallel government in Ikorodu Yours truly, Titilayo Benson
