Nigeria's U-20 national team yesterday in Dakar qualified for the next round of African Youth Championship qualifiers with a 1-0 win over the junior Teranga Lions in what was a much better performance by the Flying Eagles.
Playing on a synthetic surface, Haruna Lukman gave the Flying Eagles victory with the lone goal in the 37th minute of the encounter to complete a 3-0 aggregate win following the 2-0 win recorded a fortnight ago in Abeokuta.
In other matches played so far in the qualifying series, Sudan knocked out Kenya 4-2 on penalties after aggregate scores was level at 1-1 with the Sudanese winning the second leg in Khartoum 1-0.
In Rabat, Benin showed their superiority over Morocco in an entertaining 3-3 draw to qualify 6-3 on aggregate. Also through is Gambia who consolidated their 1-0 win in the first leg with a 3-1 win at Mauritania.
South Africa also made it through, overcoming the disadvantage of a 1-1 home draw in the first leg to thrash the Reunion 7-1 in the return leg.
Nigeria will next face Sudan in their quest towards the African Youth Championship holding early next year in Rwanda and the World Youth Championship holding later in 2009 as well in Egypt.
